Spring cleaning isn’t just for clothes. April is a good time to “finish” your finances – especially now that tax season is behind us and the year still has a long way to go.
Here’s a simple, high-impact list to tackle in an afternoon:
1. Develop your followers (seriously)
This is more important than most people think. The beneficiaries of retirement accounts, life insurance, and annuities often decide where the money goes, even if your will says otherwise. If you’ve had a big change in life – marriage, divorce, children, loss – make sure everything is still there.
2. Consolidate old accounts and clean up the mess
Old 401(k)s, leftover IRAs, forgotten HSAs… they add up fast. You don’t always need to combine, but you want to know what you have, where it is, and whether you are paying extra fees or taking more risks than you intended.
3. Check your “cash cushion” again
An emergency fund is not a one-time decision. If your expenses have changed, your income needs have changed as well. Consider whether you have enough money set aside for the unexpected, and whether that money is in the right type of account for availability and stability.
4. Pay attention to investment tax
You don’t have to chase what’s “hot.” Instead, ask:
• Does this still fit into my schedule?
• Do I feel comfortable in good and fun times?
• Am I too focused on one area?
If you haven’t updated your finances or analyzed your distributions in time, a small change now can prevent big problems later.
5. Review the security plan
Insurance isn’t fun, but it’s part of a solid plan. A quick look at health, disability, and umbrella coverage can help you spot gaps or make sure you’re still healthy.
6. Develop your goals for the rest of the year
What are your priorities for the next 6-12 months: travel, home project, college expenses, retirement savings, or debt payment? Clear goals make everyday money decisions easier.
