Student Work on Campus: How Titans Create Their College Experience

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.– While working part-time in college can make an already stressful lifestyle even more difficult, it is a reality for many students across the country and around the world. While Westminster College may be smaller than most universities, the Titans around campus often find ways to keep themselves busy while pursuing higher education..

Westminster College offers the majority opportunities for students to attend campus while earning a small amount of money to help cover the cost of their education. Students can find themselves working in a variety of different jobs on campus, whether in the athletics department, the McGill Library on campus, or the broadcasting department. Other leadership positions available to students include serving as a Resident Assistant or president of a campus organization.

Sports broadcasting and communication major Ethan Kurtz knows how to balance a busy life as a Titan sophomore, a member of the men’s lacrosse team, a producer of “Titan Town Sports” in Westminster.“, and Titan Crew Assistant for the Broadcast department here on campus.

Kurtz detailed the many things he does to ensure the broadcast department is one of the best in the area, saying, “I help with the technical aspects of radio and TV—preparing broadcasts, preparing audio files and working with peers to produce content.”

Using his own expertise in the world of broadcasting is one of the ways Kurtz and many other Titans participate in college.

While working on the athletics department, sophomore Marco Smallwood’s career looks a little different than in broadcasting..

Marco does not have an official title as a student employee but works closely with Assistant Athletic Director for Communications and Administration Kevin Fenstermacher and Senior Director of Athletic Communications Anthony Esposito, primarily working on athletic statistics.

Smallwood says, “My favorite part of the job is being able to support and watch the many events of the sports teams we have here on campus, as well as the people I work with.”

Junior Zach Planey took a slightly different path than others on campus, serving as president of the Campus Program Council (CPC). Planey’s job includes planning fun campus events for students, including weekly bingo and trivia nights.

On top of his studies, Planey says, “If we factor in regular events, office hours and the extra hours I spend planning emails, I probably spend 8 hours a week working on my job, and some weeks are longer than others.”

Freshman and member of the men’s soccer team, Connor Brenneman, finds time in his days working on campus as a resident assistant (RA) in Shaw Hall..

Brenneman says that while she enjoys connecting with other students and helping shape their college experience, balancing her responsibilities can be exhausting, to say “… it takes a lot of time management skills to balance the three jobs that are prevalent on campus.”

Rounding out the list of some of the student workers who make Westminster College great, English Literature major Jane Patterson works as a help desk worker at the McGill Library on campus..

Patterson appreciates the work ethic that comes with being a librarian, saying, “My favorite part of my job is being in the library and helping people find and return books. i slowly, we can do homework on the table. Must be you are very quiet. ”
