With 25 years of experience, local advisor and Crawford County resident Brian McConnell founded McConnell Wealth Management to provide independent, comprehensive financial and investment services to families throughout Crawford County.
BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—After more than two decades in the financial industry, a local consultant decided it was time to take the leap and do his own thing. About a year ago, he started McConnell Wealth Management, an independent financial planning and investment advisory service focused on helping individuals and families throughout Crawford County and the surrounding area plan for their financial future.
With nearly 25 years of experience in the financial industry and 18 years as a licensed advisor, McConnell has spent most of his career working in the banking industry. Over time, he realized that he wanted to be flexible to work directly with clients and guide them in ways that fit their individual goals.
Starting his own firm gave him the opportunity to do just that.
Today, McConnell Wealth Management offers a variety of services designed to help clients make important financial decisions. These include investment and portfolio management, retirement planning, financial planning, tax planning and estate planning. McConnell also works closely with client investors and tax professionals to help ensure that financial decisions are consistent with long-term strategies and tax considerations.
While investment management is the main focus, McConnell says financial planning is often more than choosing where to invest money.
“It’s really a general approach,” he explained. Sometimes it talks about what loans one should pay or whether it makes sense to pay taxes on certain investments.
In many cases, tax planning can be just as important as investment returns, as paying unnecessary taxes can significantly reduce long-term growth.
Originally from Attica, McConnell attended Ashland University and now lives in the Colonel Crawford school district, where he and his wife Magdalena are raising their five children. Magdalena works with him in the business as Operations Manager, helping to oversee the day-to-day operations of the firm.
Family values also play a big role in how McConnell approaches his work. His parents own a mining business, where he spent many years working with his father.
“My parents own an excavation business, and I grew up working with my father, learning my ethics from him,” McConnell said. “Excavation is hard work—it takes good work ethic to get the job done—but it also takes honesty and integrity to build a reputation like theirs.” The ethics instilled in me by my parents and grandfather are the reason why I chose to incorporate our family name into my business, McConnell Wealth Management.”
Couples are also always active in the community. Magdalena serves as treasurer of the local PTO, and McConnell has spent time coaching youth soccer in the past. He is also a member of the Knights of Columbus and attends Holy Trinity Church, where he serves on the Treasury Board and participates in several committees. McConnell also supports and works with many local non-profit organizations throughout the region.
For McConnell, working with clients in small areas like Crawford County is very important.
“A lot of people don’t know what they don’t know when it comes to financial planning,” he said. “Helping to guide someone and seeing them realize that they can achieve their goals—whether it’s retirement or something else—is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.”
McConnell also encourages people to start thinking about their financial future early.
“Start early, and if you haven’t started early, start as soon as you can,” he said. “Don’t wait until you’re ready to retire before you start planning for retirement.”
Above all, McConnell says his goal is to provide transparent and honest guidance to every client he works with.
He said: “I always focus on what is in the best interest of my client.
