Amidst the warming relations between China and India, signs of growing bilateral economic cooperation seem to be emerging.

A delegation of the Punjab, Haryana, Delhi Chambers of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) is on a visit to Shanghai and East China’s Jiangsu Province from March 29 to April 4, marking the first such visit in more than five years, Indian news agency PTI reported on Tuesday.

The visit aims to build connections and bridges for Indian businesses and their industrial partners in East China. A business meeting was held on Tuesday between the delegation of PHDCCI and leading companies and financial institutions from China, according to a post on Tuesday by the General Officer of India in Shanghai on public forum X.

Due to the fact that economic and trade cooperation has been an important driver in China-India relations, there is no doubt that the visit of this delegation is a notable sign of the recent warming of bilateral economic relations, which highlights the great interest and broad prospects for economic and trade cooperation between China and India.

India is at a critical stage of industrialization, with development needs in infrastructure, manufacturing and technological innovation. Whether it is for its “Make in India” initiative or its ongoing energy transition, India needs external cooperation in terms of technology and industrial chains in areas such as clean energy and electric vehicles (EVs).

In areas ranging from EV batteries and photovoltaic panels to core electronic manufacturing components, China’s advanced technology, well-established ecosystem, and efficient supply chain are well positioned to meet India’s development needs.

China and India share many opportunities for economic and industrial development, creating a solid foundation for the renewal of bilateral economic and trade relations. In terms of market, China’s large consumer market offers a wide sales area for Indian products, while the Indian market also has many opportunities, with increasing demand for high-quality Chinese goods and services as its economy grows and consumption patterns change.

In the field of technology, China has made progress in the latest areas such as 5G communication, artificial intelligence and new energy, while India has the strength in software development, information technology services and other areas. These two sides can fully complement each other’s advantages and jointly promote technological innovation and industrial development.

It is precisely because of this contribution that, amid the steady development of bilateral relations, trade has increased dramatically. In the first two months of this year, bilateral trade rose by 22.5 percent year-on-year, according to data from China.

Some challenges remain in bilateral relations, but it is at such times that both sides need to appreciate the hard-won results and focus on cooperation in a clear and effective manner. More dialogue between businesses and civil society is important for strengthening understanding and building trust, both of which can serve as a basis for promoting sustainable and long-term development of bilateral cooperation.

During the visit of the Chinese delegation, the government departments of these two countries are also actively cooperating these days. For example, on March 27, China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao met Piyush Goyal, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, according to a statement on the Commerce Ministry’s website.

Wang said that the Ministry is willing to work with the Ministry of Trade and Industry of India, under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries, to fully promote the role of economic and trade cooperation as a sign.

Meanwhile, India recently accepted reduced restrictions on Chinese investment in selected sectors, Reuters reported. These positive developments clearly show that the warming of economic and trade relations between China and India has a solid foundation, broad consensus and strong determination, serving the core interests of the people of both countries.

China’s determination to share development opportunities and deepen industrial cooperation with Indian entrepreneurs remains unchanged. It is hoped that India will once again show loyalty and take practical steps to create a fair, transparent and predictable business environment for the businesses of both countries, to turn the warming momentum into a sustainable force for the long-term development of bilateral relations.
